The match Australia v. Lancashire was commenced at Manchester to-day .From the Australian team SmitJg Webster, Mayne, and Minnett fV T omitted. The weather was threatening, with sunshine at intervals. The attendance was small. Tho pitch was soffish.
Hornby won the toss for Lancashire and decided to bat.
Makepeace and Spooner opened to Hazhtt and Matthews. There wan a strong cross-wind- Makepeace played outside one from Matthews in the fifth over and was bowled.
,1. T. Tyldesley was taken bv a goodt catch in the slips by Hazlitt off Matthews. Ho batted for 30 minutes. Spooner made a bad stroke, and was caught at the wicket wide oi> the off side, his total being 27. He halted for 70 minutes. He gave a chance at 15 to Whittv at mid-on off Hazlitt.
A total of 50 appeared in an Jour. Sharp was taken at short-leg by Bardsley, who fell. Heap and E. Tyldesley played carefully. The bowling was steadv. The century was reached in 3)5 minutes. At lunch there were four wickets down for 100.

Brooke, before scoring, was missed: in the slips by Hazlitt off Maclaren, and when at 14 he was missed in tho slips by Matthews off Kelleway. In the next over he played on to Kelleway. The partnership yielded nil, arc i-io last three wickets added four. The innings lasted 180 minute?, and closed for 146. Jennings and Kelleway opened for Australia, facing the bowling of Ziean and Whitehead. Jennings was bowled by a beautiful break-back from Dean, the ball going off the batsman’s pads. Dean "was swervingMaacrtney batted 13 mintues without scoring. Fifty were put up in 55 minutes, when Bardsley went. Macartney then had 30, his play being good on the leg side. He gave a chance at 24 to Huddlestone, at- short leg, off Dean. The century occupied 100 minute*.'. Matthews ‘was taken left-handed brilliantly at mid-off by Huddlestone. Then stumps were drawn, the score standing at 130 for five wickets. Macartney was in for 105 minutes. He played a stylish all-round innings. He had a total of fifty in 70 mint:16S.
