FATAL TRAP ACCIDENT.
BIT BREAKS AND HORSE BOLTS

At Hastings yesterday morning .John Conway, married, aged 44 years, was killed through a trap accident in Heretaunga Street. It appears that Mr. John Walden and deceased were driving to the borough sewer works on Park Road, where they were both employed, and when in front of Gaeger’s tailoring establishment the horse shied at a nackmre on the footpath. Walden, who was driving, took a strong pull on the reins to steady the horse, hut the hit broke and the horse, being without control, bolted. The deceased tried to descend from the front, and had one leg on the step and his hand on the shaft- when lie was thrown to the ground and the wheel went over his body. The unfortunate man was taken into the Pacific Hotel where Dr. Storv was sent for, but- he died before medical assistance arrived. The man’s ribs were broken and his chest bruised, but it is believed he died as the result of collapse ensiling- on shock. The body was taken to the house of his brother-in-law, Mr. "Wallace, in Karnrnu street, where an inquest was held at 2 o’clock this afteiiinon by Mr. C- Hughes. J.P. A verdict of “accidental death” was returned Mr. Walden bad a narrow escape. The horse galloped along Here-tauno-a Street, and when about in fi-oniT of the Grand Hotel, Walden slid off from the,rear of the vehicle, experiencing nothing worse than asnaking resulting from the fall, a cut knee and a roll in the dust. The horse and trap continued on to the sewer works in Park Road, neither animal nor trap suffering any damage. Conwav leaves a widow and a young family of two hoys and two girls, the eldest being only 10 years of age.
