Sergeant Hutton has returned, from a visit to the Coa w.

At Wellington on Saturday Mr. T. M. Milford. M.P., and late I*layer,' was accorded a welcome home bv the Mayor and city councillors.

In connection with the Birtbday honors, Sir Albert Spicer and Sir Henrv Primrose have been made Privy Councillors. Mr. Frederick Green, director of the Orient Company, has had a knighthood conferred.

Mr Michael Muliooly, who died at Tolago Bay last week, was born m Ireland and served in the Hawke’s Bay Infantry Volunteers under Capt. Tuke in 186-5, taking part in engagements at Waiapu, and in the fight at .Vaerenga-a-hika. The following year he was a member of the garrison thathad charge of the deported rebels at the Chatham Islands- -In IS6S these Maoris, headed by Te Keoti, overpowered . the guard and escaped. Mr Mnllooley subsequently settled at Tolago Bay. where he at one time owned a large amount of property. He was involved in litigation over land matters from time to time, and it is said that years ago scarcely a civil sitting of the Supreme or Magistrate’s Court went past without him being involved in an action on one side or the other.

“Our Own” at Napier wires:—The projected departure of Mr A. B. Pollen, Commissioner of Crown Lands. fc-r Christchurch, where he has been appointed to a similar position, was made the subject of a gathering of all the Crown lands officers employed in the Napier office on Saturday,' when Mr. F. A. Thomps on chief draughtsman, asked Mr. Pcllen to accept a smokers’ outfit of solid silver, containing tobacco pouch, matchbox and cigarette case, as a mark of the very high esteem in which Mr. Pollen is held by all who have worked under him. He congratulated the recipient on his promotion. Mr. Pollen feelingly acknowledged the compliment, and said that he hoped that- the same loyalty of service as he had experi-' enced would be extended to the new Commissioner. Mr. Sadd. Mr. Pollenwill leave for the South on Tuesday morning.

Hon. James Bryce (British Ambassador at Washington) arid Mrs. Bryce arrived at Dunedin bv the first express from north on Saturday afternoon, and on arrival were met at tlie station by Air. W. Burnett (ActingMayor) _ and the city councillors, and were driven to the Town Hall, where acivic welcome was accorded them, in the presence of a large and representative gathering. In- reply to a speech of welcome bv the ActingMayor, Mr. Bryce'spoke at considerable length on the vorv pleasant impression which was being made on bis mind by bis visit to tlie country. The scenery, especially during the latter stage of the railway journey to Dunedin, had been magnificent, and in addition he had been impressed with the f;mt that on account of its great natural resources and energy of its inhabitants. New Zealand must one day carry a big population. Mr. and Mrs- Bryce wall leave for the Cold Lakes district on Monday morning, and atfer a few davs will return again to the North Island before leaving New Zealand (says a P.A. message).
