HOCKEY.

SATURDAY COMPETITION. The competition was continued on Saturday afternoon at the Reserve, when a good exhibition of the game was given. Civil Service A. defeated Mercantile by 4 goals to- nil, and West End secured a victory over Civil Service by 7 goals to 1.

CIVIu SERVICE A. (4) v. MERCANTILE (0). As was expected this was the star game of the day. 'Civil Service (blue) showed good combination, but- their full-back line was slightly on the weaic side. Had Mercantile (black and white) .bad more combination the score against them would not have been so high. In the bully-off Hudson failed to get the ball -out to his inside man, with tlie result that Mercantile set up- a hot attack, but Hutton sent the ball down to Dudson, who set the forwards in motion. What locked /like a score for the Blues was stopped by Miller, who cut in and sent the ball iip the field. Civils were again on the attack and Dudson, getting off-side, gave relief to the Blacks, who, headed by Morse, set up a rather dangerous looking rush. Combination was wanting, however, and they were sent hack again, only to renew the attempt. Morse, in his eagerness to score, got off-side and was penalised. Civils attacked and were stopped by Miller, but on a second attempt were successful, File drawing first blood for them. Play had settled in the centre when the whistle sounded for half time. On resuming Civils made a hot attack and File scored. The Blues were again on the aggressive, but Auld misshot. Play settled in Mercantile territory for a while. Miller cleared and sent to the forwards, who made a straight line for the Blues’ goal. Hutton came on the scene and, gathering the hall,, carried it down the field and passed to Dudson, who transferred to Auld, who scored. A succession of rushes by both teams followed, Civil having slightly the better of matters. As the result of a good passing rush by Civils Hutton, who had changed to the forwards, scored -his side’s fourth goal. Mercantile attacked and looked like scoring, Stevens making a good save, and using his feet to some purpose- The whistle sounded a few minutes later, victory resting with Civil Service A. by 4 goals to nil. Mr P. Sim capably refereed.

WEST END (7) v- CIVIL SERVICE B. (1). ’ -

West End.- met and defeated Civil Service B. by 7 goals to 1 after a onesided contest. Goals were scored for West End by Olsen (4), Neilson, Price and Sim, and for Civil by O’Donnell. Mr J. Doyle refereed.
