AUCKLAND AS A NAVAL BASE.
HARBOR BOARD AND ADMIRALTY. [PEE PEESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, June 18. The fact'that Auckland is to be the naval base in the Pacific for the China Squadron was referred to by the chairman at- a meeting of the Auckland Harbor Board to-day. He announced that the board had placed the top floor of the “F” shed on the Queen Street wharf at the disposal of the Admiralty for the temporary storage of gear. No definite word ns to the plans oQ the Admiralty had been received, but information’..was being gathered which would later be placed before the board. Captain Rollaston,. R.N. (in charge of the naval establishment at Sydney), # in company with Lieut.-Col. John Eton (Director of Artillery in New Zealand), paid a visit of inspection today to the proposed site for Admiralty ammunition stores at North Head.
