Notes of the Day.
THE CHILDREN'S HEALTH
Apropos of a matter mentioned at the last meeting of the Gisborne District School Committee, it is interesting to note what Hon. G. W. Russell, Minister in .Charge of Hospitals, had to say to the “Gisborne limes 3 ’ special Dunedin, correspondent on Saturday. The Minister, in effect, remarked that the Government was inaugurating a system of medical, inspection in schools. Two inspectors, a man and a woman, are to be appointed. In making the appointments the Cabinet will give special consideration to applicants who have studied juvenile complaints and also can. give evidence of a knowledge of dentistry, since the care of the children’s teeth is to bo made one of their first, considerations. In addition to examining the schools, the inspectors will be required to give instruction to teachers so as to enable them to detect -weaknesses in their pupils. It is hoped that the teachers 'will soon be able to give material assistance by discovering symptoms of tuberculosis in pupils who may be prone to that complaint, or evidences of defective eyesight or other troubles. The inspectors will work hand in hand with the Public Health Department. Careful reports are being prepared with a view to the thorough establishment, of the new inspectorate. “The ovork of the inspectors, 33 said the Minister, "will be of great value. The whole intention of the Department is to provide a •practical institution. Not only will the health of tile country's children be benefited very materially, but the bill for hospitals 3 maintenance will'be reduced very considerably.' 3
