DR. BARNARDO’S HOMES.
RALLY IN ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH.
An after-Church rally in aid of these Homes was held in the Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening, when Air H. W. Lee, organising secretary in New Zaeland, gave a short address on the work of the Homes. In introducing the speaker, Rev. Win Grant made a most impressive appeal on behalf of the Homes, describing them as worthy of the sympathy and help of all Christian people. Air Lee briefly described the origin of Dr. Barnardo’s Homes, which have rescued and trained over 75,000 destitute boys and girls. '* Oi' 25,000 young emigrants to Qanada and other colonies} 981 per cent, have proved successful. There are 9,000 children in the Homes at the present time, and for food alone a sum of £250 is needed every day. Destitution and moral peril form the sole claims for admission, and children are admitted without votes or promises of money, without regard to age, sex, health, nationality or creed. It is proposed ‘to organise a yearly house-to-house collection in Gisborne in aid of these popular homes, with a view to receiving the small subscriptions which few people would think it worth while posting to England. The suggestion lias been warmly adopted in the Dominion, and the results show a ready and generous response. Air Lee, in appealing for volunteers, described the system of„collecting, which is verv easy, as tho collector is relieved of all personal explanation and solicitation.
