FIRE AT TE KARAKA.

A SHOP COMPLETELY DESTROYED,

About 4 o’clock on Sunday morning a fire occurred at To Karakaa in a shop occupied by Mr. Robert Harris. Tlie fire apparently had been burning for some time, for when it was discovered by a boarder at the Rangitira Hotel re then iiad a strong hold. He drew the attention of Mr. Williams. the licensee, to the fire, and Mr. Williams hastened to- the scene, the Jn mates of the building having just been awakened previous to his arrival. Tlie place was full cf smoke, and just as Mr. Williams succeeded in getting Mr. Harris’s box out the door ■ between the shop and dwelling rooms fell down. Tlie place, was then burning fiercely inside, and it was impossible to again enter it. A bucket brigade was formed, and the fire was prevented from spreading to the chemist’s shop on the one side and the old smithy on the other. A gig and harness were saved bv nulling down the Lack of the shed in which they were kept just as it caught on fire. The shop was completely destroyed, and tliere was practically nofcnir.g saved. The building is owned by Mr. CAllaiy. and is insured for £2OO, while Mr. Harris had a policy over his stock and furniture of £IOO.
