“CHARLIE GREEN” AGAIN.

THE FREAK PHILANTHROPIST.

“Charlie Green,” the young American Who, scattered gold and silver in the Strand and Fleet Street, and as a consequence was charged with causing an obstruction, has again come into ju'ominence by distributing cheques for various amounts among the audience at the Shoreditch Empire Music Hall. It had not been advertised or announced outside the doors, but- at ten o’clock the manager appeared before the curtain and announced that Mr. Charlie Green was anxious to give away a considerable sum of money. He wished personally to hand it, or see it handed, to members of the audience in the shape of cheques, which would be honored at the paybox at the hall next day. As may be imagined, the announcement was received with vociferous applause, and when Mr. Green, attired in tlie green suit in which he appeared at the police court, stepped upon the stage the whole house rose and clfeered itself hoarse. The eccentric “'millionaire’’ produced from his pockets some scores of sealed envelopes containing cheques, and proceeded to fling them at random among the occupants of the stalls, pit, and balcony. He alsohanded dozens more of the envelopes to attendants in the hall to distribute on his behalf, walking all the time rapidly from one side of the stage to the other. A great .scene of excitement ensued. Cries of “Charlie” arose from every part of the house, and hundreds of hands were outstretched as the coveted envelopes flew in every direction. and were somewhat Toughly scrambled for. At length the manager again step lied to the front, and, after stating that the programme could not further be interfered with, he announced that it was Mr. Green’s desire that every parson who had paid for admission to the gallery should have his or her monev returned before leaving the hall. * There was more c-heering and cries of “Good old Charlie,” as the mysterious philanthropist bowed his acknowledgments from the wings and disappeared.
