Rea! -wintry weather was experienced in Gisliorne yesterday. A southerly gale set in late on Saturday night and increased to almost a hurricane a few hours later, and this continued till midnight on Sundav when the weather cleared considerably. _ The gale was accompanied by blinding squalls of hail and sleet, and the low-lying portions of the town were quic'k'lv Inundated. At the comer cf . Gladstone Road and Customhouse Street early yesterday morning a miniature lake had formed, which eonoidvVahlv inconvenienced pedestriajn traffic- For the 24 hours ending 9 a.m. yesterday morning ,97in. of rain was registered, but fully twice that amount must have been recorded up to midnight, though the figures could not be ascertained. The wind gauge registered seme 510 miles for a few hours, and considering that the wind came in gusts it is estimated that the velocity was from 50 to 60 miles an hour.
