DIFFICULTY OVER THEATRE LIGHTING. A LITTLE BIT OF A JOKE. By Telegraph—Special Correspondent. NAPIER, July 4. The Borough Council last night decided to sign all the tramway contracts. Mr. Black, engineer, was present, and advised on various matters, and defended his actions against the attacks made at the previous meeting A clerk of works is to be advertised for to supervise during Mr. Blacks absence. Mr- Williamson romped home in the election for the vacancy caused by the death of C'r. Bee. The lighting of the municipal theatre pending the installation of the town’s electrical supply is causing some difficulty. Tenders for the work were opened at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council. Messrs. J. J. Niven’s price was £2lOl. Messrs. Tolley and Sons (Wellington) offered to do the work for £1849. Messrs. Niven and Co. suggested that a. temporary supply of lighting could he obtained from their power-house at the Port and conveyed to the theatreThe cost of the proposed scheme would be about £IOOO, provided that cables used could be utilised later in the borough system. It- was decided to refer the question to the theatre committee. , , , “I would net like to he looked upon as a joke.” said Cr. Taylor at the meeting of the Borough Council last ni<dit. The retort was the outcome of”a suggestion, by Cr. Taylor that a remit should he sent to the Municipal Association to the effect that when a vacancy occurred the highest unsuccessful candidate at the last election should be “called up.”. .The Mayor said that would not be giving effect to the ratepayers’ will. The highest unsuccessful candidate might be a- bit of a joke.” Cr. Taylor asked if the Mayor looked upon being a. hit of a joke himself. No rep]-,- being forthconring, Cr Taylor added: “W ell, I would not 1 like to ho looked upon as a joke.” The remit will not ho sent forward, as it failed t-o find a seconder. That’s where the joke came in!
