GAS v. ELECTRICITY.

(TO the editor.) The leading article which you published recently as to the difference in the price cf gas and electricity has caused a good bit of talk. Of_course, after all is said that can be said, it is mainly, I suppose, a question as to which is right in its_ claims. The electric light is a good light right enough, .but it is not so very cheap as is generally imagined, and there is a lot of •prejudice it, As to the gas, despite what the makers Ol' oVUnei s say, you cannot get as good results as are claimed. If I had the money I Suppose I would have both in my house. But money is needed to pay for the sewerage connection. Tho more I sec of it the more I think that it is going to be a big losing proposition for us ratepayers for a long time to come. It was too premature, and at any rate before going in for it the. Council should have made a bigger bid for the right to supply the freezing works and all the consumers of power. As things go I am surprised that the corporation is not doing a bit more hustling. Why have they not stated their case in reply to the pievioils correspondence ? Hoping some abler pen than mine-will take up this matter. —I am, etc., “A CAREFUL OBSERVER.”

[This letter would have appeared earlier, but for stress of space. As to “A Careful Observer’s” remark about the corporation not having “stated their case” it may he added that it is held in official circles that, despite what “Electrical Engineer’’ said, small electrical consumers are really receiving better value than are small gas consumers for a similar expenditure. An official report on the subject has been prepared, but, unless it haa boon altered it did not touch cn tho real crux of the dispute. Moreover, it is understood that at any rate it is not intended for publication Ed- G.T.]
