ROLLER SKATING.

THREE-MILE CHAMPIONSHIP. Judging by the attendances at each of the three sessions at the Garrison Hall rink on Saturday, skating lias fairly “caught-on” with the Gisborne public. The chief attraction of the evening was the race for the threemile championship of New Zealand between J. Rowland, of Auckland, and W. Macfarlane, of Gisborne, the contest- resulting in Macfarlane’s victory. Rowland, who had his ankle sprained a few weeks ago, had the misfortune to fall and again twisted it. Nevertheless he put up a' good fight to retain the title. Rowland found the corners rather difficult for a start, and Macfarlane gained one lap in the first fifteen. From then on the holder had his opponent “well out” hut the local lad kept him in touch till the finish. The sixty-one laps were done in the good time of 14min. 25 sec. In the ladies’ race Miss Y. Lister proved an easy winner. The rink hand was in attendance in the evening.
