BURGLAR IN GISBORNE.
MAN ARRESTED ON A SERIES OF CHARGES.
A SOMEWHAT SENSATIONAL CAPTURE.
ACCUSED BROUGHT BEFORE THE COURT AND REMANDED.
A series of burglaries) lias been pe petrated recently in Gisborne, and i consequence of information receive by the police, a man named Arthi Turner was arrested by the police o Tuesday evening. f On Saturday night last the hous of Mr. Ernest Adair, in Harm Streei was entered and articles valued at £ were stolen, including a carving knif and fork, an alarm clock, two razors two military hair brushes, find a pai of ladies’ shoes. / On the same night, Miss/ Ambridge daughter of Mr. C. H,/ Ambridge thought that she was behig followei wh-oi> proceeding to her In mo in Har ris Street. j A little later Mrs An bridge wen to the washhouse, an# as she wai about to enter, though;/someone wai there, and on putting/out her banc touched a man, who .was hiding ii the building. He immicliately pusher his way past her and |ecamped. On Monday night |ie house of Mr. J. Johnson, in Glacutone Road, was entered. j Mrs Johnson, why was alone in the house, thought that,she felt a draught and on raking investigation found that the front door was open. She then helrd a noise-* in the front room, and thhking at was a boarder, called out, Jut received /no reply. Sh 1 then went into- the room and discirered a man hiding underneath the’hod. Slie immediately raised an ala™, 1 but tlie man cleared out. It wjs afterwards ascertained that he h.d taken a coat belonging to Mr. Rrry, a boarder. Some of the' bicycle dealers in the town unformed the police that certain jievcis were being offered for sale ay a xrange man at a very low price. Thelnan’s description was given to the piice, and Constable Harold located lim on Tuesday evening, and, in coiaany with Detective Mitchell, stoppel the stranger in .Gladstone Road Id arrested him. Thednoticed that the man .was wearinla coat similar to that stolen from JM Johnson’s house. Oonsple Harold had gone away by thisjime and Detective Mitchell, who hai. piece of material similar to that ofjyhieh the stolen coat w.as made ink pocket, proceeded to compare it m the coat the suspect was wearing! The 4 immediately bolted and rushed ii Bright Street, eventually running a section on which the GladstomJjoarding-house formerly stood- \ He waapre overtaken by Detective Mitclfand after a sharp struggle was ta to the Police Station. The noli hen went to the Albion Hotel, wh the accused man had been stayir md found articles which it is alhg were stolen from Mr. Adair’s ns ice. The non fid he was a commercial travelled ifl he arrived from the South oSmrday. He weasel at the Police Court yesterd aiming before Mr. W. A. Bartoni.Jy., charged with having brokenid/entered the dwelling of John osJn, with intent to commit a crim ! He also charged with havingenterelie house of Ernest Adair and waiving stolen articles valued at £5. On application of the polioe, accused remanded till July 24.
