ENGLISH ATHLETES' TAUNTED
[UNITED PSES9 ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT) LONDON, July 16. The American and foreign press continue to tauntingly criticise tlio English athletes. Sonie Swedish papers attribute their want of success to lack of esprit de corps and reckless track methods. They accuse the English competitors of disabling Danish footballers, and allege that they tried to disable others. Mr Thomas, the “Daily Mail” correspondent, .says that although the filial results have not done much to retrieve England’s position, there is abundant evidence of skill and endurance in Greater Britain. Correspondents in newspapers contend that because other countries specialise men into machines fl) a 4 does not show their superiority. The system produces curiosities, not men.
AUSTRALIA EASILY FIRST.
[UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT) STOCKHOLM, July 16. The swimming aggregates are: Germany 22 points. Sweden 17, Australia 14, Britain-12, American 9, Canada 6. Most of the German and Swedish points were gained in diving, in which Australia was not represented. Australia was really easily the first swimming nation. Miss Durack gave a 300 metres’ exhibition swim in 283 3-5 seconds —a record. The dead' water suits the Australian and Canadian rowers. Dr. Ward replaces Heritage in the Australian crew. Th© Leander crew show improved form- Tinne has been included in the-crew. As the result of protests the heats and final in the eightoar race will be allowed three days.
