The report regretted that assistance from the public was not more liberal, j [lt will be recalled that on April 11 a. serious drowning fatality occurred at the groyne* when a man named Leonard Goatley and a boy named Gordon Brown were swept into the sea and drowned. Wm. Douglas, employed on the dredger Maui, made a gallant attempt to rescue Brown, but found that tne latter had become entangled in a fishing line he was using so that Douglas could not free him. The Coroner (3lr W. A. Barton, 5.31.) remarked at the inquest that Douglas's action was most commendable and was well worthy of recognition by the Royal Humane Society.
