The course is somewhat shorter than Henley, and the. finish is difficult. There is a big sweep round to a ‘short finishing straight, through narrow arches of a bridge. * .In the first beat Germany beat France in 6riiin. 45scc. In the second beat, Australia v. Gotlienburgh, the former, who drew the outside position, got away smartly, and led Gotlienburgh at the 500 metres, thence the Australians gradually increased their lead throughout, and the contest was a. mere sionBerlin beat Hungary in 6mm. 32 sec. ... New College beat Norway in smin 42)sec., and Leander beat Canada, after a keen race, in 6min 22 l-sth sec. Leander and Australia meet to-mor-row.
(Received July 19. 12.55. a.m.) The Australians rowed 30 strokes to the minute towards the finish, and spurted in the last hundred metres, the style greatly impressing the Swedes- - The Leanders in their heat led throughout bv a length, going to the front at 500 metres.
Canada at tlie three-quarters instance rowed at 40 to the minute, recovering half a length. ' The Leanders put in a brilliant spurt and won by three-quarters. In the first round of the sculls, Bottler (Canada) and Kinnear won their heats. The latter heat Hoffman (Germany) easily by a. length. MeVillv (Australia) heat Stall nice (Germany), but was disqualified for cutting across his opponent’s water, the boats bumping frequently.
