THE RELIGIOUS WORLD,
A strike is not- merely an anachronism, being a- return to brut© force without regard to the suffering it entails. but is; in defiance of the true principles of trade, as well as of Christianity. But leaders and members of trade unions would of course, reply: “We resort to this as our only defence against the greed, of employers. There is no equality of exchange, the capitalist g. v: w, - e than a fair share!” Yory v. . then, if there bo reason to su'-p; t that this is so. recourse should bo iiad to the Arbitration Acts which exist for the purpose of making due inquiries and rair adjustments in such question, but it i< of the essence of such inquiries and decisions that hath sides must abide by the award.—Bishop Neville. ’ - * r
Lay preachers who go on strike can be just as obstinate as any ordinary unionist. Several months ago naif a dozen of the lay preachers in the Methodist circuit at Castlemaine declined to go into the pulpit because ey had a dispute with their superintendent. Some distinguished members of the cl arch were de > ’ted to mediate between the parties, and it vas consequently supposed that the quarrel had been settled it appears. lioweve that the struggle is si ill proceeding, and last night- a large number of the members or the persuasion in the district met- at Cm.tlemaine, and agreed upon terms < n which .they would accept reconciliation. Like St Anthony, absolutely all that they ask it “all that may be," for their terms are a clean slate for all parties on both sides, and let bygones be bygones. This offer has yet to be considered by the superintendent.
