ELECTRIC LIGHT.
WHY A FURTHER LOAN IS REQUIRED. MAYOR EXPLAIXS THE POSITION. The Alayor (Air AY. Pett-ie) explained to a “Gisborne Times” .reporter yesterday why the-loan of £15.0.00 for the extension of the electrical installation was required. The Alayor said that both the electrical engineer and the borough engineer had recommended that the loan should he raised and the money was for the purpose to extend the present service and to assure the whole system will lie placed on a sound and proper basis. The method of generating* and the distribution of current laid down by Messrs Niven and Co. was departed from on the recommendation of the Engineer for sound reasons. and the present plant and all its branches r.pre substituted, -and now form tire foundation of wlrat will he in future a first-class investment for Gisborne.
After giving details concerning the present installation the Alayor said that it was only carrying a portion of the private and street lighting that would ultimately Ire required of it When tire sewerage system was completed current would be. required fordriving the pumps, besides charging the batteries*of the tramcars. There was an increasing demand for. current for both private and industrial uses, and it was confidently anticipated that the service would quickly extend. With the demands that will shortly have to be met the engineers were of opinion that the limits of safety will be exceeded by next winter if the generating units are not supplemented. If was intended' to allocate £6OOO of the proposed loan for tlris purpose. Th e available material for transmrssion was practically exhausted, and in order - that more might be proem on and the necessary meters obtained it was necessarv to obtain £oJLO. Hie balance £3OOO would be for future development in connection with . the work cf distribution. It. is anticipated that the consumers will so rapidly increase that pruclence demanded that this amount should be raised now. Hie money, said the Alayor, was to be raised on the same lines, as the recent loan, so that it could he taken up in sums of £IOOO and upwards as required;. The first- year’s injtorfcst woul-ch be paid out of loan and before the second year’s interest is required the .electrical branch of the Council’s undertakings will have reached such a position as to be self-supporting.
