UNEMPLOYED IN GISBORNE.

♦ . JOBS TO BE FOUND OX THE RAILWAY. Be Telegraph—Special Correspondent ' WELLINGTON, July 2L It was quite surprising to the Public Works Department’s officers to learn this week through a telegram from the secretary of the Gisborne Laborers’ Onion that there is a large number of men out of work in that district. The Government officers have not been accustomed to- hear of such difficulties in Gisborne, even when the cry of the unemployed is raised elsewhere. However, to cope with the position, the Minister for Public Yorks has instructed the District Engineer at Gisborne to put on as many men as c an be found profitable employment. They arc to be selected by the Labor Department at Gisborne with due regard to their necessities, this precaution being taken in the interests of married men.

I understand that ■work can be found for about SO men on railway construction. the Public Works Department having put actively in hand the section of line which some day will connect- with Napier.

["•Regarding Mr A. H. Anderson’s representations to the Government on liehalf of the unemployed in this district the A 1 inister of Public "Works has replied as follow: ‘‘Re work for unomployed: have made representations to Public. Works Department, and find that instructions have been given to the District Engineer to employ as many men as posible on railway and road construction. Labor Department’s officer at Gisborne will assist in selecting men required."’ Eleven men were sent to the railway construction works at Patutahi yesterday.]
