SEAS IN TIMARU HARBOR.
MOLE TO BE EXTENDED. [PEE PEESS ASSOCIATION 1 TIMARU, July 26. During the last three weeks or more, north-easterly seas have prevailed here, sometimes very strong. Usually, heavy seas come from the south-east. The existing breakwaters provide very satisfactory shelter from the southerly seas, but not from the northerly. It happened that the Home liner Rotorua lay in port a week during the had weather, and the seas in the harbor made it difficult to hold her securely. It was done, though with a few breakages of mooring chains, the crushing to splinter of 35 pine log fenders, and the- constant watchfulness of the staff. Impressed by this experience, the Harbor Board to-day unanimously decided to remedy the defect by carrying out as soon as possible the recommendation of Mr Maxwell, consulting engineer, some years ago, to add s()oft to the eastern mole, and instructed the engineer to prepare a plan and estimate accordincrly. Mr 'Maxwell said it could lie done for £IB,OOO. The board has a balance of £17,000 of authorised loan unraised.
