SOCCER.
Championship Points. The following table to date will make interesting reading:—
To-day’s Matches. The games set down for to-day are as follows : Y.M.A.C. v. G.T.A., on the Reserve, at 3 p.m. County v. Taruhcru, at Makauri, at 3 o’clock. Comments. To-day’s match at the Reserve is expected to be the host game of the season. G.T.A. have a fine forward line and now that their defence has been strengthened should give a gjood account of themselves. Y.M.A.C., however, are severely handicapped by Winks’s inability to turn out-, but with their recent acquisitions the only unbeaten club should keep a clean slate. G.T.A. gained a very easy win over County last Saturday by 12 goals to 2 County, however, were poorly represented, and the result was a foregone conclusion. Now, County, pull yourselves together! Frank Sharp showed glimpses of his old form, and if only ho and his brother Basil would train, both County and the Poverty Bay district would be the better for it.
Re Defaulting Teams. Y.M.A.C. won by default on Saturday, when Tuvanganui failed to put in an appearance. In view of further calamities of this description it would be as well to quote til© following notice of motion for the next general meeting v of the Otago Football Association:— “That rule 15 of the rules governing cup competitions be repealed, and in its place l>e substituted the following. ‘Any team failing to keep its engagement. shall, unless it has given at least two day’s notice to the secretary of the Otago • Football Association of its inability to keep such an engagement, be fined—in the case of a senior team £l, and in the case of a junior team 10s 6d—such fines to be paid into the funds of the O.F.A.’ ” Such measures are somewhat stringent, yet will go to show that some clubs cannot default with impunity. Laws of the Game. Law 8, under which a goalkeeper was permitted to use his hands within his own half of the field, was, during the “football week,” held recently by the International Board in London, altered to read: “The goalkeeper may within his own penalty area use his hands, but shall not carry the ball.” Referees and goalkeepers please note this change of law 8. Representative Matches. Wellington and Hawke’s Bay reps, are to meet each other on 17th inst. The last occasion on which these teams met was a Brown Shield contest, Wellington winning very easily.
