HARBOR IMPROVEMENT.
A PROGRESSIVE SCHEME. PROPOSAL TO DREDGE THE WAIKANAE. PLANS PREPARED BY BOARD’S ENGINEER. Recently the Gisborne Harbor Board instructed its Engineer (Mr J. A. McDonald) to bring up a comprehensive report on the question of developing the inner harbor to its utmost capacity. 'The Engineer has taken the matter in hand and has already prepared a plan for the extension of the harbor along the Waikanae Creek, probably to the vicinity of the railway bridge, a distance of some 300 yards. He proposes using the Maui for the dredging work and the creek, if the scheme is adopted, will be dredged to a depth of about 20 feet.
It will aliso lie considerably widened and wharves will be constructed aleng each side, thereby providing ample berthage accommodation for fair-sized steamers.
A swing basin is also suggested in this vicinity and this would allow ample room for vessels to turn. The patent slip will be allowed to remain in its present position as it is understood that it will not interfere with the Engineer’s proposals 'Pile matter will come before the Board at its next meeting, but a plan of the work has already been submitted to the Minister for Marine for his approval.
