CANADA AND IMPERIAL DEFENCE.
NEWSPAPER OPINION
[UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT] (Received Aug. 8. 10.30 p.m.) OTTAWA, Aug. 8.
The “Toronto Times,” commenting on .Sir Geo. Reid’s protest against closer Imperial relations, says that Sir Geo. Reid must have the safest and soundest ground for trusting in the present slender ties! The “Toronto Mail” suggests that in Imperial matters, which the British Government finds too delicate, and in which it is too busy to take the lead, should be assigned to the jurisdiction of a real Imperial Council, and adds that Mr Borden (Canadian Premier) has taken the necessary initiative in this direction. Mr Hanna, Provincial Secretary of Ontario, says that Canada should contribute three or four Dreadnoughts as an earnest of her good intentions to help the M'other country, and further states that Ontario is overwhelmingly in favor of immediate action to aid the defence of the Motherland.
