HOCKEY.

(By “Bullly-off.”)

I must congratulate the selectors. Messrs 0. R. Olsen and J. Doyle, on their selection of the lady representatives to travel to Christchurch. 1 think all must agree that the best team has been chosen, irrespective of all club sentiment. It now remains for the team to get combined practice under capable coaching, and also theoretical instruction if possible.

A short critique on each of the selected players may be appreciated, putting each in the position in which I think they will probably he placed :

E. Fromm (goalkeeper): Not afraid of the hottest shots, stops well; bit slow in clearing, docs not get hustled ; shmes out in rep. matches.

J. Ferguson (full hack): A brilliant defensive player. Stops well; clears cleverly, and thoroughly deserves her place. Takes some getting past.

51. Moore (full hack): Fine tackier, hits splendidly, shade weak in stopping ; hacks up her fellow-hack well, works admirably with J. Ferguson.

M. Malcolm (centre half): The bestgirl for the position. Uses her stick brilliantly. Very nippy, stops well, inclined t-o give sticks.

M. Rcddell (right half) : A fine defensive back; hits well, very fast, tackles back vigorously, can be relied on to do very well.

L. Fanning (left half): 5Ye all at stopping. Hits well, very fast; not afraid to tackle. Should practice stopping the ball before hitting.

R. Malcolm (centre forward): A fast, nippy forward; plenty of dash, uses her stick well; passes with judgment. Shoots well.

B- Butterfield (inside right): A fine heady player, passes well to her wing, stops splendidly, also shoots well.

B. Pearce (inside left): Fine heady forward, passes well; good at stopping ; splendid dribbler. Deserves her place. Shade slow-.

G. Warren (outside right): Should practice heating opponent when dribbling; very fast, good at stopping; keeps place well. Centres with fine strokes.

M. Fail-lie (outside left): Should also practice beating an opponent whilst dribbling, very fast; shade weak at stopping. Centres beautifully. A fine goal shooter.'

M. Winter (inside left): A fine dribbler; bits well, shade slow; not as good as last year. Shoots well. De~‘ serves selection.

I. Parker (outside right): Fine dribbler, passes well; uses her stick to advantage, and stops splendidly.

M. Fromm (half-back): Has shown vast improvement during last month, and has earned her place. Hood at stopping; hits well, and a good tackier.

I am sorry that places could uot be found for such fine players as Tv. Gallagher, M. McLeod, C. Baty, G. Skinner, W. East, 0. Plowman, and M. Thelwall, but I cannot see where the selectors could possibly leave out any of the chosen team.

There seems some doubt of a couple of the selected players not making the trip. I sincerely trust that every lady will honestly do her utmost to get away, as «it is hardly fair to the rest of the teaiii and to those wno have been working hard to get the team away, to find one or two of the best players backing out. I consider it a great honor to- !be Ui selected representative, and I am sure all the ladies will faithfully uphold that honor, and prove that they are no novices

at tho game of hockey,

The practice and coaching they will receive during the next three weeks should give the team the fine 'coDamnation fso necessary towards success.

The men’s match Civils v. West 'Wild, on Thursday, was an interesting game, and resulted in a win for West End, thus placing them four points ahead of Te Rau, who are running second.

Stevens, the Civil goal, played a lino game, using his feet well. * * *

P. Hudson, at full back, was particularly safe, and effected some fine clearances.

It. Huston showed out prominently and his goal was a well-deserved one.

Robinson and Port both worked hard, their stopping being particularly gftod.

A. Tlutton shone out conspicuously in tho forward line, using his stick well, and beating his man splendidly.

F. Auld kept up his name as a fine consistent forward, playing a closer heady game.

J. Goer also deserves mention for Ills good wing work.

The ‘West End forwards brought off some fine passing rushes, which bore fruition on several occasions. * * •

B. Redgrave played a brilliant game at back, his stopping and clearing being particularly fine.

F. Price and R. Howell stopped well, and cleared with fine sweeping strokes.

J. Roderick worked well, always in the thick of the play, and using his stick to fine effect.

S. Roderick, M. Rice, R. Horse, J. McLisky-, S. McLachlan, and Kingsland, were a formidable forward line, and time and again set up vigorous bombardment on the Civils’ goal.

They passed well, and were ever ready to nip in when an opening came their way.

I notice that Hawke's Bay are sending up a men’s rep. team shortly, so it behoves our players to keep in practice, so that they may turn the tables on H. 8., and avenge their defeat of last season.

September 7 is the date set down for the Canterbury-Hawke's Boy match for the Cup. This should be an interesting game to watch, as both provinces have fine teams this year.
