THE POULTRY INDUSTRY.
encouragement of export j TRADE DESIRED. j [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.! WELLINGTON, Aug. 26. V deputation representing the poultry industry of New Zealand from as far north as Auckland, and as far south as Dunedin, waited on the ’’rims Minister to-day to urge the encour.ummont of poultry export trade. _ It was represented by the deputation;that there was a market for eggs m Honolulu and Vancouver, and that it was the duty of the Government to encourage the opening up of such markets. Hie Government should make it compulsory that all preserved eggs should be branded 'and sold as such. More use should be made of experimental farms in connection with tne poultry industry. There was a great need for dissemination of knowledge concerning poultry raising. Mr John Studholmo (Canterbury) asked that tlio Government, should make persistent and consistent endeavors to encourage the industry, because it could lit. made one of the greatest adjuncts of the small or allotment farmer. . In reply Mr Massey said the Government would do everything it possibly could to assist the export trade. Ho would instruct tlie Department to make the necessary inquiries- He agreed that there were possibilities of trade with Vancouver and the Government might go to the length of assisting in a trial shipment. So far as the stamping of eggs was concerned it would be necessary to pass legislation before that could be done. _ The expenditure on poultry farms liad heen very great. In fact it had rather staggered him. Before the Government could do any more it would be necessary to go very carefully into tlie matter. .
