THE GLOVE THROWN DOWN.
A FIGHT FOR THE FEDERATION OF LABOR. HUNTLY TO SUPPORT WAIHI ENGINE-DRIVERS. [PEE PEESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, Aug. 28. It is stated that 13 out of 16 enginedrivers and firemen in the Waikato Miners’ Union at Huntly have seceded from that body, and have joined the Waihi Engine-drivers’ and Firemen’s Union. Membership cards will shortly come to hand, and ..notice of withdrawal from the Waikato Miners’ Union will be given, bv the enginedrivers and firemen this week. In a letter received from Huntly from one of those cenversant with the position, the attitude of the Huntly engine-drivers! is clearly expressed“We have thrown the glove down,” the letter proceeds. “If the Federation wants a fight they can have it. Many others who have been so long afraid of the Federation of Labor and its methods will eventually range themselves on our side.” A further communication states—- “ Notwithstanding all the intimidation we have been subjected to by the Waikato Miners’ Union, and in spite of the manner in- which the militant portion of that union inched the en-gine-drivers’ and firemen’s- meeting and obtained possession of the chair and controlled the meeting to a great extent, we are more determined than ever to resist them to the uttermost. The militant portion of the union are under the impression that they have completely bluffed us. They never made a greater mistake, for our notice of withdrawal will be sent to the Waikato Miners’ Union during' the week.”. ■
