[INDEPENDENT PRESS CABLE.I PARIS, Aug. 22. A Japanese financier in Paris declares that the presence of Mr. P. CKnox, American Secretary of State, at the Mikado’s funeral will be regarded by the Japenese, the highest and the lowest alike, as exceedingly had taste. “We shall feel,” he went on to say, 'That Mr. Knox has come to our country on .business, and that lie is working the dollar doctrine. We regard our Emperor with veneration, and the presence of any business element at the coining sacred rites will be an .impertinence. “Mr. Knox mav assure us of Arneriea's friendship, but we do not need to be taught what we well know.” CHURCHILL’S GANADIAN VISIT. — “ MIGHT no CALCULABLE HAT"!.” EX-MINISTERS DECLARATION.
[INDEPENDENT PRESS CABLE.] OTTAWA, Aug. 19. The lack of any official confirmation of the report that Mr Winston Churchill, First Lord of the Admiralty, is coming to Canada, has led to the belief that the visit is improbable. Mr. 11. Emmerson, .M.P., formerly a member of the Laurier Cabinet, expresses the hope that Mr. Chin-chill will not come. This country, lie points out, is now in a position to formulate its own policy. If Mr. Churchill were to visit Canada a public demonstration would he. necessary, and the result might be that it would do incalculable harm. “Speaking Imperially, and not politically.” added Mr. Emmerson, “the strands of the Empire are so intangible that the least strain might break them.”
