Captain C. Shawe has been appointed aide-de-camp to Lord Liverpool, Governor-elect of New Zealand (says a London P.A. cable).
A Sydney P.A. cable says that the funeral of Monsignor C-ar'roll, Viei--General of the Sydney diocese, was largely attended yesterday. General Godlev, Commandant of the Territorial forces, was a passenger to Tokomaru by Sunday’s, steamer and he will come on to Gisborne tomorrow.
Mr Griffiths, the popular caretaker of the Garrison Hall, was presented last evening with a case of pipes and a pouch by the members of the noncommissioned Officers’ Club, in recognition of his services in connection with the Club.
A meeting of the Gisborne NonCommissioned Officers’ Club was held last evening for the purpose of welcoming Staff-Sergt.-Major Henry, who was recently transferred here. The function passed off pleasantly, the guest lecturing interestingly on “Elementary Musketry.” The President (Sergt.-Major Bishop) was in the chair.
Mr J ames H. Pauling, manager of the Masterton Implement Co., and formerly of Ashburton, died at M aster ton yesterday after a short illness. Deceased had,taken a prominent jart in the local body work of the town and was a Justice of the Peace.—P.A. Tits death lias occurred at Adelaide ("according to a P.A. cable) of Mr. W. P. Aukl. Mr Auld accompanied Mr. Donald Stewart, the explorer, in bis 1861 expedition across Australia. The death is announced (says a London P.A. cable) of Samuel Coleridge Taylor, the composer. An Invercargill P.A. wire says: One of the passengers bv the Muitai arriving at Bluff yesterday was Mr. .1. Watts Ditchfield who will commence a three weeks’ tour of the Dominion in the interests of the Church of England Men’s Society. During the voyage Mr. Watts Ditchfield suffered severely from dvsentry and seasickness, and -when the steamer arrived had to be carried ashore by members of the society who had gone to the port to'welcome him. The visitor was conveyed to the Club Hotel, where he was attended bv Dr. Torrance. Mr. Watts Ditchfield will probably be laid up-for some days.
Inspector A. Newton, who lias been in charge of the Dunedin branch of the Department of Labor for the past two years, has received word that he has been promoted to the Auckland branch, vice Inspector Shanaghan, retired. Inspector Brow-eft-, of Christchurch, will take up Inspector Newton’s duties in Dune-elm, while Inspector Willis, of New Plymouth, will go to Christchurch in place of Mr. Browett. Baylor, of Napier, will proceed to Wellington to take charge there (says a- Dunedin P.A. message). At the Baptist Church last evening, Rev. Keith Ewen presiding, a largelyattended gathering accorded a farewell to Mr H- Shields, Deputy-Mas-ter, L.0.L., on the occasion of his approaching marriage with Miss 0. ■Sinale. The chairman made the presentation and Adjutant Marshall and others present added eulogies to the assiduity of the guest in connection with lodge work and whatever else he was associated with. From L.O.L----55A, Ml- Shields received an oak salad howl, and from R.B.P. a handsome tray. Miss Kearney gave, a recitation and songs were contributed by Mrs English and Messrs A. Edwards, A. Kearney and S- Hannah.
