THE RUGBY C, ONTTtO VERS Y
(To “Longnot”)
Sir, —Being a fairly constant miner of your criticism in your weekly column of notes on Rugby football, I was rather surprised at the manner in which you took ■ exception to the picking of the P.B. representative team The team as originally picked to go to Hawke’s Bay, met warn some very causth remarks from some people, who should have known better, and also from a few players who thought they should have been included, hut who lost sight of the fact that the team was to be a senior rep. team and not a junior rep. team, in which latter case, these players would have shown to advantage. Regarding your remarks in regard to the aerobatic performance of the selector, no doubt had you taken the trouble to make inquiries, you would have found that a large number of the players selected were unable to make the trip, also that a large number of our prominent players informed Air. Howard that they could make the trip to Napier, but not to Napier and Palmerston as was originally arranged. As regards the success of rep, teams picked by the selector, there is not much cause to squeal about. Their record as far as can bo gathered at present is: Matches played 20. AA on 17; lost 2: drawn 1. In conclusion. I would also like to point out the fact that some of our local Union, also think that, they should have- a sav in the matter of selecting the teams, hut next year 1 hor>e to sec a team picked from the P.B. school teams sent away to do battle with a Hawke’s Bay .school team, and then will he the opportunity of some our local union to try their skill at picking a team. —I am, etc., FREE KICK.

THE ASSOCIATION GAME.
FIVE-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT.
Y.M.A.C. A. (3) v. G.T.A (1)
Seldom in local Association football has there boon such fast play as -was witnessed at the Reserve on Saturday in the fivo-a-sido tournament.
The.' contesting teams were Y.M.A.O. A. and G.T.A. A. Both teams were playing one man short- and this helped to quicken the pare. The semi-finals lapsed through G.T.A. B. forfeiting to Y.M.A.C. A. and Taruheru B defaulting to G.T.A. A : thus leaving two A teams to fight out the final. ’Y.M.A.G.’-s win is a very creditable one, for they played with plenty of dash and combination and with good finish, while G.T.A., -with good combination, lacked the finish which is neeesasry. The following were the teams Y.AI A.C. (red) —A. Webster. G. Webster, •J. Frazer and \\ . Y inks; G.T .A. (black and white) —J. Burd, \ . Archibald, H. Shields, and J. Wallace. Referee, H. Shields. From the bounce the play became fast and the ball travelled up the field into G.T.A. territory but Archibald, with a long kick, sent the leather well down the field. A. Webster obtained possession of the ball and passed to G. Webster, who transferred to Winks •arid the last-mentioned player, after a good run up the field, drew first blood
for the Rods. Y.M. again set the pace and were repulsed by the full back. Nothing daunted, they returned to tho attack, and from a long pass by Winks, Frazer, beating Archibald, scored Y.AI.A.C.’s second goal. G.T.A. rallied and forced play into Red territory, but A. Webster was impassable. They returned to the attack and just before half time Shields scored their only goal. On re-com-mencing play remained in the centre for a while till Burd sent out to Shields, who made off up the field and was just on the lino when Frazer, kicking the ball over the line, gave them a corner. AYith the resultant kick AVallaee failea, the hall going behind. From the home-kick fast play follow oil, hut neither side gained much advantage. G.T.A. continued to press and secured a corner kick, hut the kicker again failed to place the ball in tho field. The Blacks again had YAM. defending and secured a couple of corner-kicks, but on each attempt failed. A. AYebster took tho home kick and passed to AVinks, who, after an excellent run down the field, scored for Y.M.A.C. The whistle sounded shortly afterwards with the score 3—l in favor of Y.AI.A.C.
Advice has been received . locally that in all probability a senior and junior representative team from Hawke’s Bav will arrive here next Saturdav.
