THE ADVANCES DEPARTMENT.
HON. J. ALLEN MAKES AN IMPORTANT STATEMENT.
[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION I , +1 WELLINGTON, Sept. 26. In the House of Representatives Hon J. Allen, replying to the discussion on the Imprest Supply Bill on Thursday morning, said the Reform Party did not continue the practice of its predecessors and put ridiculous things into the Supply Bill when they were not wanted. The Government would not reduce amounts for advances to workers and settlers or loans to local bodies. When the Government took office, the country was committed to £2,152,195 on account of the Advances Department, and of this £1,481,700 had been paid, but they still had £700,000 on their shoulders. They had been paying £40,000 per week for advances to settlers. When liabilities were paid off they honed to remove the £SOOO. restriction to the loans. The previous administration had advanced £115,000 to one 1 borough. The Bill passed its third reading.
