YOUTHS’ ROAD RACE. An eight-mile cycle race for lads under the age of eighteen years will ho held on Thursday, October 3. the course being to Makaraka and back. Valuable prizes have been donated for this event and given fine weather a very successful race is anticipated. Entries for this event close with Mi l\ Fish bach, Gladstone Road, at y p.m. on Saturday evening next, anti judging by entries already received a large number of competitors is expected. ° The entrance fee has been fixed at 2s. 20. The official times were: Sutherland shours 3Smin 31 2-ssec; Cook, ohrs 37min 31 3-ssec; Prehble, shrs 41min 32 2-osec; Cordon ohrs 3Smm .5 2-osec. : H. Hendersoii (TV angannv -ohrs 20min 31 sec. About ten minutes better than the existing record. E. Wall (HalswelP (9min) secured the second fastest time (51 ire 22min 27sec). H. G. Cook, who rode in the race for the first time, finished just behind the winner. He said that the ride was tough and the . roads in patches were pretty bad. It- was necessary to pick the way carefully. . , £i lt was too solid for me in the first half,” was the remark of J. F. Preb hie. who finished third, “out I stuck to them. The roads were pretty good and the race pretty solid.” H. G. Henderson (Wanganui), the fastest rider, lias been riding for eight years and last year ho obtained the third fastest- time. In 1910 he had punctures and his chance was spoilt -Speaking of the ride, ho said the roads wore just as good as in previous years, though in places awkward. He had two spills—one bad one after passing Geraldine, when ho fell over McTeigue. His time was ohrs 20min 31 sec, breaking the 1910 record.
