GISBORNE RIFLE CLUB.

A SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL

The social held by the Gisborne Rifle Club on Saturday evening was a big .success, and the object of the Executive in bringing the members together and getting them sworn in was attaint'd. A great number of men went through the “ordeal” of taking the oath of allegiance to King George. The two justices, Mr Warren and Mr Clayton, who had offered their services for the purpose of completing the declaration forms, were kept hard at it for over an hour. A really good vocal entertainment added to the pleasure of the evening, whilst the toasts were most enthusiastically received, the speeches being of a very high order indeed, and quite up to the host traditions of the Overseas Club. The following were the principal items of the programme: “Mary of Argvle,” Mr A. Duncan; “Mary Ann She’s After Me,” and “Standing at the Corner of the Street,” Mr Smith; “The King’s Own,” Mr Proud; recitation, “The Rouseabout,” Mr Price; “Their First Cricket’Match,” Mr A. Webb; “Milligan’s Black Cat,” Mr A. Sugden: song, Mr J. H. Jones. The toast list was as follows: “The King,” Mr J. R. Kirk; “Gisborne Rifle Club,” Mr Lissant Clayton, responded to by Mr D. Rait; “Territorials,” Mr J. Warren, replied to by Mr Geo. Holmes and Captain Shelley; “Overseas’ Club,” Mr Wm. Pettie, and responded to by Mr Kirk ; incidental music was supplied by Messrs J. H. Jones, A. Cowley and P. Sugden.
