NEW BUSLDINCS IN CHILDERS’ ROAD.
THE CONTRACT SIGNED
The New Zealand Whipping Co., in order to cope, with increasing business in Gisborne lias decided to erect a new building' at the corner of Customhouse Street and Childers Road to accommodate its local staff, and the tender of Mr. A. F. Lawrie has been accepted for the work. The new building, which will form an architectural feature of Gisborne, has been designed bv Messrs J. Greig and Sons, who have had extensive experience in Australia and in tho South Island, - including Christchurch. The building will*consist of two storeys, and will be .constructed of brick, the outer facing being of compo. It will have a frontage of 45ft. to Childer’s Road, and 60ft. to Customhouse Street, and the ground floor will consist of three suites of offices. The Childer’s Road entrance will be the means of access to the Now Zealand Shipihg Coy’s offices, a fine capacious suite of rooms replete with every convenience, both for the public and the staff. On the right will be the manager’s room, and directly opposite the accountant’s office, while at the far end, to the left, will be found the general office and opposite tho typists’ room. The Customhouse Street entrance wiii give access to two suites of offices which u'ill bo leased.. The walls arc to be of re-enforced concrete, while the roof is to be constructed of the same material, but tlie latter will be covered with nouchatel asphalt and will lie the first of its kind in Gisborne. Tho interior of the walls will be plastered with Keen’s cement and finished with hydrated lime. The ceilings will bo executed in fibrous plaster and will be beautifully ornamented. There will he three windows on the top storey facing Childer’s Road, all glazed with plate glass and the centre one will project, the glass used being curved for this purpose. Below there will be three windows, while in the side of tho building facing Customhouse Street there will be eight windows. The top storey of the building lias not been divided on the plan as yet. The building will be so constructed that- another storey can be added if it is required, and special foundations have been put in for this purpose. 'l'lie building itself when completed will be worth £4,200.
