News of the outbreak was sent to Queenstown and doctors and other helpers soon arrived, including many men from the Mount Lyell mine. The rescue parties got to work under the direction of the general manager and the Engineer of tho Mt. Lyell mine, compressed air at the rate of 7000 feet per minute being pumped into tho workings and other urgent efforts being made to render the entombed men safe. A telephone message was received from the 1000 ft level: “For God’s sake give us more air!” Dense volumes of smoko are now issuing from tho main tunnel, and there is a big crowd round the mine. Idle hist report was”that four men had been rescued from the 500 ft, level, which is regarded as about the worst position from the point of view of smoke. This lends hope that most or all wiL be rescued.
