CRICKET
PRACTICE MATCH. Victoria Domain was well dotted with cricketers on Saturday afternoon, who took too opportunity of getting in some useful practice in view of the starting of competition matches this week. On the concrete pitch, a scratch match was played between the Kir Kalia Club and a team of all-comers. The all-comers batted first, and ran up a fair score. It. Gartshore (44 retired), 0. R. Olsen (26 retired), W. Atkinson, Winks and W. Gibson all showed good form for so early in the season. G. Pollock, H. Jones, and A. Wood shaped best with the ball for Kia Kalia. For the latter, MacDonald (21 retired), Saunders (20 retired), D. Miller (17 retired). Wood (15), and Brewster (10) handled their hats to .some effect. Gartshore, Olsen, W. Atkinson, and Winks bowled best for AllComers.
MATAWHERO v. TOWN TEAM
A very enjoyable cricket match was played at Matawhero on Saturday between a town team and the Matawhero Juniors, resulting in a win for the fatter after a keenly-contested game by 8 runs. In the first innings Matawhero scored 46 inns, the Town team replying with 31. In their second innings Matawhero totalled 74, and the Town team scored 81. Barbells (17 and 28) was the only Matawhero man to reach double figures. In the Town team’s first innings Olliver (12i and Tait (8) were the ouly men to make a stand, and in their second innings Olliver, McLisky, Tait, and Atkinson (12) reached double figures.
PAPARATU v. WAINGAKE
The first game between these clubs this season was played on Saturday afternoon and after a close and exciting game resulted in a win for Waingake by 9 runs. The hillsmen put a very strong team in the field, and shewed all round improvement, and it was not until the last pair of batsmen were associated that the winning hit was made. For the winners M. Connor (32, not out) plaved a fine patient innings. T. Ward (23), F. Griffiths (21). and G. Coop (11) also shaped well. For Paparatu, W. Smith hit out merrily for 58, while D. Spence (2S) and P. THE THURSDAY COMPETITION. The Thursday Competition will commence this week. Arrangements for the starting of the various competitions will be made at the meeting of the P.B.
