BERT LOWE’S RETURN

Bert Lowe, the well-known local boxer returned to Gisborne by the s.s. Victoria on Saturday morning from his successful trip south in quest of the heavy-weight championship of New Zealand. Lowe was met at the wharf on his arrival by a number of boxing enthusiasts, and heartily congratulated upon his victory over Mitchell at Millerton, which gained for him the coveted title of heavy-weight champion of New Zealand. A ‘•Times’’ representative had a chat with Lowe on Saturday, in the course of which the latter stated that lie had suffered no ill effects as the result of the fight at- Millerton, other than the injury to a bone in the knuckle of the first finger of his right hand. He intended to have the hand examined hv Dr. Scott to-day. has received a telegram from Barney Ireland relative to their fight at Christchurch during Cup week, and will reply to this after his hand has been medically examined. Lowe stated that his party had been excellently treated, both at Mil* lerton and at Westport, and the large house on the night of the fight had boon most impartial. Lowe attnbnteel liis ■win to the vSplendid condition he was in, and in this connection paid a very high tribute to his trainer, Mr W. J. Spencer.
