THE EAST COAST RAILWAY.

WORKERS PROTEST AGAINST CO-OPERATIVE SYSTEM PETITION PRESENTED TO THE HOUSE. [BY TELEGRAPH—PARLIAMENTARY CORRESPONDENT] WELLINGTON, Oct. 14. Hr MacDonald (Bay of Plenty) in the House this evening presented tae following petition from N. Nicholson and 212 other co-operative workers engaged on the East Coast main trunk railway: “We, as co-operative workers and (dependents residing on the GisborneMotu section of the above works, -view with alarm the suggested abolition of the co-operative contract system in the construction of pub’ic works and the reintroduction of the oiu contract style. “Although, a number of years have elapsed since the introduction of the present system the many evils of the old contracts are still fresh in the memory of workers and »ve honestly feel that the present system, if properly carried out, is the best and fairest for the workers generally as well as being satisfactory to the State. “We therefore place before you as the representative in Parliament of the district in which we reside our earnest and humble protest against the co-operative contract system.”
