THE ATTRACTIVE GIRL.

It is so easy to be unattractive that a fight should be made against it. A lack of sympathy repels, but those who take an interest in the griefs and joys of others are as magnets drawing confidence and love towards themIt is far harder to find a congenial spirit willing to rejoice with one’s good luck than to obtain spasmodic sympathy in time of trouble. Compare a girl ever on the alert to disparage with another who sees only good in those around. Which is the more attractive ?

The habit of controlling thoughts is a miich-talked-of subject nowadays. When these mind -whispers are held in check and only permitted to murmur kind messages, they react upon the expression of the countenance. Plain features lighted with radiance from within may be far more attractive than mere outward beauty. If it is an advantage to acquire an attractive manner, it is also important to ensure a pleasing personal appearance. Hero are golden rules: Neatness, cleanliness, simplicity. A very inexpensive and well-made walking costume that has developed a dip in the skirt and shows grubby trimmings, ceases to be attractive. This attire compares unfavorably with a gown, costing perhaps only a few pence per yard for material, but possessing a smartness all its own by reason of attention to detail.

iShieh little things mar a turn-out. A slight fraying at the hem—a belt from under which the waist-band sags ■ —a blouse that rucks up and shows the draw-strings—a worn-down heel, a missing glove-button.

“No one will notice it” is a very foolish idea. ‘People do spot these things uncommonly quickly, though sometimes perhaps almost unconsciously, and hardly realise, what it is that renders the wearer so unattractive in their eyes. There is an attraction in spotless linen when worn with coats and skirts. A white turn-down collar and tie hover between being charming and quite the reverse. A tie can 'Spoil everything either by the careless manner in which it is tied—and there is an art in this—or by its unsuitable texture and hue. A collar should never be used again after one wear until rewashed. The freshness has departed. For soft turn-down linen collars it is a tip to buy a very small man’s size. They have a smarter, more workmanlike appearance than those cheap fancy things usually supplied on blouses for the fair sex- Quite the nicest finish to a collar is a good safety pin stuck through the centre of the edgo of one turn-over, brought under the tie, up through the opposite

turn-over, and fastened. Attracive girl, your manner and dress aro equally charming, but do you ensure a good complexion by careful and moderate diet ? Indulge in plenty of exercise, but do not recklessly ovei'do it. If, like the heroine of many a tale, you possess “curls like tendrils dancing in the wind,” well and good; but they more commonly dance out of curl, for ringlets and wind do not always make good partners. When this is the case, good-bye to all pretence of attractiveness. Guard against such calamity by cofling the head carefully with a view to depredation of wilful ze-

phyrs ! A new-fashioned . aid is a boon. Just a hairpin prong one side and a sharp pin the other. The pin sticks into the under-brim of the hat, the hairpin end sticks through the curl, holds it up, and lo! the trick is done; and a very successful and attractive little trick, too.
