The Poverty Bay Turf Club’s meeting takes place on Thursday and Friday next, and judging by the entries the meeting should be a most successful one in every respect, provided fine weather prevails. In the Trial Handicap Scorch and Caher Davon should he hard to I>eat. The former accounted for quite a number of six furlong, races here last year, and beat among those lower down Lord Possible, Tinning Post, Compliment, .Miss Jewel, Tyne Lass, Wee Rose and Redder. Caber Davon only started twice last season and won one six furlong event, while he finished third in the other to Rising Sun and Amaru. Eocene, who' won one five furlong race last season for the Hon. J. D. Ormond. and finished a neck behind Bon Ton in the Pacific Handicap (6 furlojogh) at the 'Wellington R.C.’e. Autumn Meeting, beating among others Oijligant, Styx and Haslceync, should also have a. chance. Golden Loop and Strathmoifa have recently been in winning form and should run well in the Hurdles. Slcacombe. ■who" finished second in the Tomoana Hack Hurdles at Hawke’s Bay and -third in the Taradale Hurdles at Napier is nicely handicapped at 10-3, and must be given a chance. Fort William, who lias been off the scene for some time, is given his share of weight in the First- County Stakes, and both Iney and Scorch are more liberally treated. Auldearn, if well, should take some heating, while Marangai and Miss Jewel should also run prominently. In the Spring Handicap Birkline has been given his share with 9st, but if he starts I expect him to run prominently. Iney lias only recently been taken up, and this may discount her chances. Waiorewa. has been restricted to short courses, and it was only at the recent Avondale meeting that she scored for tlie first time over six furlongs, so that Ido not fancy ‘her chances. Multiply, one of the local Cup candidates, has never shown any form over a distance as yet, while Flying Soult finished second to Wee Olga in a Welter (1 mile) at the A.R.C. Spring Meeting last season, and second to Dawn on a similar event at the A.R.C- Summer Meeting, beating among others Admiral Soult and Cheddar. He also finished third to Jolie Fille in the Plumpton Handicap (9 furlongs) at the recent Avondale meeting. Therefore he has to be considered. Ardfert is fairlv well placed in the First Welter Handicap, while among those further down I prefer Rising Sun and Colleen Dhu. The Flying Handicap should provide a good race, and Our King and Waiorewa, despite their weights, should be handy at the finish. Monorail is meeting Waiorewa. on much more favorable terms than at Avondale, and perhaps may reverse the tables. Waikehua showed particularly good form over seven furlongs and a mile last season and he should not be far away at the finish of the First Hack Flat if he startsSea Pink, I am told, is not coming to Gisborne, hut if he does he is bound to run well. The acceptances are due to-night.
Royal Scotch Avas not long in returning some of his purchase money to Ibis new 7l OAvner, for he Avon tho Caulfield Futurity Stakes _ of 1000 sovs, last Saturday, and finished second in the Coongy Handicap on Wednesday. Royal Scotch is favorite for the Caulfield Cup, which Avill be run to-day.
Continuance annexed tho Dowling Steeplechase at Randwick on Saturday last-, and his A'ictory Avas not altogether unexpected, for I am informed he started at a A-ery short price. This is his. first Avin over the big fences. Sir Lethe and Hautapu, avlio filled tire places, are both Noav Zealand horses.
Lady Medallist added another win to her already lengthy list by annexing the Eclipse Stakes at the V.A.T.C. Meeting on W ednesday. According to the cable she Avon very easily and Should be hard to beat in the Caulfield Cup to-day. * # «

The following mares arc botiked to visit Signalman:—Ladylike, Alinerve, Bonomiana, Pulia, AVliitirere, Kilsyth,. and eight, of Messrs Sisterson and Alcßae’s mares. Trafalgar, according to a cable yesterday, is to go into retirement on account of his failure to stand another preparation. He is now 7-years-old! and with the exception of his illus*trous grand' sire Carbine, he is the best racehorse that Australia has ever seen. He started altogether 59 times and scored in 24 events, his latest victory being in the Randwiek Plate, wlich he has won on four occasions. During his racing career lie won £22,123 in stakes, while Carbine, whose record is 43 starts, 33 wins, 6 seconds and 3 thirds, annexed £29,476 in prize money.
Regarding New Zealand hurdlers, the Sydney •‘Referee” says:—‘‘When a horse reaches ten years of age it is natural to expect him to deteriorate; but the New Zealander Paisano is an exception to the rule, as it is improbable he was ever better than at present. Being well backed, and ridden a particularly well-judged race by T. Jones, he caught Warwidgerie before reaching the last hurdle, and won cleverly. 1 have no doubt some of Paisano’s backers felt uncomfortable when they saw him third last, and many lengths from the leading division after going half a mile, but from that out he gradually made up his ground. It was one of the best performances we have seen at Randwick for many years, and at present our hurdlers are comp 1 etely outclassed by those of the Dominion. Another of the Now Zealand division in Continuance filled third place, and one would scarcely expect such a big and heavylooking customer to either be such a clever jumper or posses as much pace as is the case.”
"Undecided, after his performance in the Muster ton Cup on Thursday, must have a groat chance in the Netv Zealand Cup. As the race is worth less than 100 sovs the win does not entail a penalty.
Lady Winsome is improving with every gallop, and at the A.R.C. meeting 'she ought to be ready to emulate some of the good deeds of heir full-sisters, lvakama and Miss AA insome.
The opinion is strongly held in Melbourne that Rath lea is likely to prove the best of the Victorian three-year-olds this season. Rat-hlea, who is a brother to .Bcllah, by Royal Fusilier —Lissadrum, was bred by Mr T. H. Lowry, and was sold as a yearling in Sydney for 240 guineas to Mr AA . Kelso.' After winning three races he. was disposed of for 1500 guineas to the South Australian sportsman, Mr si. Cbaffey, who is now racing a big team of horses. Rathlea is inbred to Musket. Royal Fusilier is by Hotchkiss, son of Musket, fjoni Janet, by Castor —Cissy, by Musiiht. while Lissadrum is by Bill of Portland —Cooya, by Nordenfeldt. by Musket. It; i?, reported from Hawke’s Bay that Air E. J. AY ait’s three-year-old colt Moonbria has gone amiss. Moonbria, who is by A lend wee—La Notte, is a half-brother to Noctuiform and Midnight Sun, and be was believed to be a colt of great promise. Another of Air AVatt’s team has also broken down. This is Jason, by Achilles—Stepina. . who was generally regarded as the best two-year-oVI in Hawke’s Bay. As two of Mr AVatt’s Australian team, Midnight Sun and Kildonan, are also under a cloud, the Hawke’s Bay sportsman has commenced the season very unluckily.
Domino is said to he sure starter for the. New Zealand Cup, in which event lie will be the sole representative of Auckland stables. AVith engagements at Trentham to fulfil be should be cherry ripe for the big handicap at Riecarton.
