RIVAL MERITS OF THE SEXES

Tlie rival merits of male and female waiters is the subject of a fierce controversy which has arisen over the announcement of Mrs 0. H. P. Belmont that at all future society functions, whether at .Newport or in New York, she will employ exclusively woman servants, v “Men waiters,” declares Mrs Belmont, America’s most beautiful suffragette, “are frequently insolent. They are overbearing and presumptuous, and cannot- be trusted to serve wine, for every time they servo it they become intoxicated, with disastrous results.”

“Men waiters,” declares Mrs Belmont, are disobliging, and says that they care more for their own convenience and comfort than for that of the guests, whereas “women are careful and always alive to the situation, serving without ostentation and pleasantly and cheerfully. They are ready for any emergency, and show gratifying alacrity in performing duties that are not legitimately theirs, in agreeable contrast to men, who are insulted by any unusual request or order. Many of the. most popular New York restaurant proprietors proclaim their agreement with Mrs Belmont. They characterise woman waiters as more reliable and trustworthy than men. They say that their patrons are always cheered by the smiles they see everywhere when female waiters are on dutv.
