During the' week no less than 30 additional men went to work at the Wailii mine and more are expected to start on Monday. At a meeting of tho Hospital and Charitable Aid Board a discussion took place on the application by the wives of imprisoned strikers for assistance. The following resolution was passed : “In regard to the recent applications for charitable aid the Board is in communication with Dr. Valintino and upon receipt of his meply as to the .attitude intended to be taken bv tho ‘Government a special meeting of the Board will be call-

ed to consider th«j}Bo applications.” This was rendered necessary because tho Board has no funds available to meet the extraordinary demands mado upon it. Accounts amounting to £303 were passed for payment and other accounts to the amount of £OO were held hack on account of financial stringency. The chairman gave a brief account of his mission to Wellington in regard to a special grant to the hospital of £IOOO, and votes of thanks were passed to the Premier, the Minister of Hospitals, Mr Harries and Mr Poland for their, efforts in the matter, also to tho chairman (Air Donaldson). An invitation was received from the secretary of the Citizens’ Committee to attend a citizens’ ball tendered to tho police to take place in November as a mark of appreciation of tlior services in maintaining law and order during the recent trying times. It -was resolved to accept the invitations individually.

Rumor is busy in regard to what will be done when the police force leave town, but by that time, the workers will be quite able to hold their own.

Numbers of the men now realise the fact that if they wish to.get back at all they must look sharp! Fully 87 went underground at No. 2 shaft'this morning.

Yesterday a deputation representing the workers at the Wailii Company’s No. 2 shaft waited on the manager (Mr Gilmour) asking, that the change house be enlarged as tho present accommodation was insufficient. It is understood that the request Fill be acceded to.

“SCARLET RUNNERS.” WAIHI WOMEN AND CAMERA FIEND. [PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM] WAIHI, Oct. 28. A well-attended meeting of miners working under arbitration laws was held here on Saturday to elect officers. The men were enthusiastic and expressed satisfaction at the progress being made by the secretary, who had been kept busy enrolling names and taking subscriptions. It is anticipated that a number local men will enrol in the course of the next few days. At a meeting at Waikino a number of now names were handed in for membership. All credit has been stopped at Karangaliake owing to the recent stoppage of work at the Talisman mine. The transmission poles in connection with the Wailii Company’s electrical power scheme are now within three miles of Wailii and the installation is expected to he ready early next year. During the usual demonstration accorded to the workers coming off shift this afternoon a youth snap-shotted a prominent suffragette, or, as they are now termed, “scarlet runners.” ‘ The woman promptly resented being photographed and made a dash for the camera fiend, and seized him and was administering a vigorous punishment when the police rescued the hapless snap-shooter.
