FIGHT FOR A PITCH.
CRICKETERS ROTJT EARLY FOOTBALLERS ON MITCHAM COMMON.
Devotees of football and cricket have been quarrelling over their respective rights on Mitcham Common, and, at the instance of the conservators, the dispute is to be settled by the courts.
The Croydon magistrates granted summonses against certain representatives of the Mitcham United Football Club for alleged annoyance and interference with the members of two cricket clubs who held permits to play on the portion of the common known as Figg’s Marsh. The footballers arrived 'with the object of playing on the same ground, and ft. prolonged altercation took place among the six clubs concerned. The goal-posts of tho “invaders/’ on being put up near the cricketers’ wickets, were thrown down. The common keeper, came -on the scene about an hour after the trouble Began, but would not take the responsibility of deciding. However, he took names, and the footballers eventually withdrew.
The season for playing football on Mitcliam Common, as far as the conservators are concerned, begins ‘on October 1.
