CHRISTCHURCH WOOL SALES.

AN ADVANCE OF ltd TO 2d

STRONG COMPETITION DISPLAYED

[PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM] CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 14. The first wool sale of this season’s series was held to-day, when 2687 bales were offered, as compared with 3402 bales at the opening sale last year. Broken weather during the last three weeks interrupted shearing, otherwise there would have been a much larger offering. There was a record attendance of buyers for the first- sale, between 50 and 60 being present. The bulk of the wool consisted of small farmers’ clip or from fat sheep shorn for local consumption or freezing. The wool was in much better condition thau last year, being well and soundly grown, and clean, there being but few earthly lots. Competition was very keen throughout for every class, and prices were fully lid to 2d per lb. above those ruling at the November sale last year. Local woollen mill representatives bid freely for all fine wools, including the few small lots of merino offered. A considerable amount of medium, clean, crossbred was brought on American account, and of the other oversea buyers those representating Home firms did most business, Continent representatives not operating to any" extent. Local wool scourers did a fair amount of business in suitable lots. The sale went off briskly, but a few lots being passed in, and was completed in three hours. Following is the range of prices, those for the November sale last year being given by way of comparison:—
