BOWLING.
TURANGANUI v. GISBORNE. A keen and interesting game of bowls was played yesterday afternoon on the Turanganui green. On the invitation of the president of the Turanganui club, a team skipped by Mr J. Ponsford, with Mr J. Coleman No. 3, Mr P. Harris No. 2 and Mr W. Pettie (President of the Gisborne Club) No. 1,. met and played a friendly game against a Turanganui team skipped by lan Simsou. with Mr. A. Sawyer No. 3, Mr Mathewson No. 2, and Mr McWhirter No. 1. The. play throughout was of the highest order, especially the play of thq Gisborne Club’s lead, Mr. Pettie. After a few heads he seemed to get his eye in and made a toucher five heads out of six. The lead of the Turanganui Club also played a sterling game and has improved out of sight since last year. Indeed. it is predicted that Mr. McWhirter will he one of the chosen representatives for the coming championship fours at Auckland. Both No. 2’s also played well, but the veteran, Mr Harris, was in exceptional form and played a game which had only two or three flaws from start to finish. Coleman, for Gisborne, and Sawyer, for Tnranganui, also played fine bowls in No. 3 position, but Sawyer was not in as good form as he has shown during the present season. The skips did tlieir part when required, and both played well, though perhaps not up to last year’s form. On the first head Turanganui scored 2, while in the second Gisborne put up one and repeated the performance by good play in the third head, drawing level with their opponents. On the fourth head Gisborne lay I arid the Turanganui skip decided to. drive, but unfortunately did not hit the jack fair and took it over to a nest of 3 Gisborne bowls. The Gisborne skip drew another, making four. The Turanganui ski]) attempted to draw, but failed, and the Gisborne skip drawing another counted five. On the next head Gisborne again lay two, but the Turanganui skip had more luck with the drive than in his previous attempt and carried the Jack amid Turanganui. bowls, scoring four, Gisborne being unable to save. At the 13th head the scores were 12 all, after which the Gisborne club registered one each head to the 17th. On the 17tli Turanganui managed to get five in, and were then one behind their opponents' scorp. On the 19th Gisborne scored one. a similar honor falling to Turanganui on the 20th, and oil the 21st, with one behind. Turanganui skip drew the shot and an extra head had to be played—--20 all. In the deciding head Gisborne No. 1 lay with his first on the jack, and Turanganui No. 1 came alongside. The following bowls were all close, and Turanganui 2 and 3 attempted to alter tho position. When the skips went down Turanganui bumped out the Gisborne shot and took the honor himself. Gisborne skip went within an inch of retrieving the position, but just failed, and Turanganui drew another. In his second attempt Gisborne, striking another bowl, missed dislodging Turanganui, and what was acknowledged by all to be one of the moat interesting and pleasant games ever played on • the green ended in a win by 2 for Turanganui.
