Sir Joseph AYard visited Bluff yesterday. He has postponed' his departure for a week.—P.A.

- Mr T. E. Toneycliffe, of Gisborne, returns on AA’ednesday, after a trip to the Homeland.

Air and Airs F. J. Foot, of AVairoa, are, at present- in Christchurch.

Air R. W. MeVilly. of AVellington, has been appointed chairman of the council of the New Zealand Rowing Association for the current- year. Captain Morrison, -adjutant of the 9t-h Alounted Rifles, has recovered from his recent indisposition and resumed duty.

Air J. AVeir, a University student from Dunedin, is afc. present assisting the Rev. AV. Raeburn, of AVairoa, in the outfields.

The Premier transacted public business at Auckland yesterday, receiving deputations in the afternoon. In the evening he was the guest-of the Auckland Club at a private dinner. This evening he will be the recipient of an illuminated, address from his Auckland supporters. The function, which is to take place in the Town Hall, promises to be a very big one, and a representative attendance is expected. Besides many members of-Parliament, Hons. Messrs. Allen, Herries, Rhodes, and Dr. Pain are will be present.— P.A.

Private advice received in Napier from Scotland records the death of one of Hafrko’s Bay's earliest settlers in the person of Mr John McKinnon, at the rip© old -age of 87 years. Deceased was appointed pilot for the Napier harbor and brought- the first steamer, the AVangawanga, into port. Subsequently he t-ook the ferry at Clive, and in 1863 settled at- Arapawanui. In the early days he served as a member of both the Napier Harbor Board and the first- AA'airoa County Council. He celebrated his goldenwedding in IS9S. and shortly afterwards bis wife died. Six years ago Air McKinnon went liome to Stornoway and re-emarried, and has since lived there. He had four sons and four daughters by his first- marriage and of these Messrs A., D.. J. A!., AY. and N. McKinnon are well-known in Hawke’s Bay, while of his daughters Afrs Orr, Airs P. Dinwiddie, Airs AV. I. Bo bun (Dunedin) and Airs J. McLean (Stornoway) survive him.
