BRITAIN’S COMMAND OF THE SEAS. NAVY LEAGUE'S DEMANDS. THE EMPIRE’S DEFENCE FORCES [UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT] (Received Nov. 22. 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 21. The Navy League demands the laying down of four large armoured units in addition to the five ships provided for in next year’s* programme in order to guarantee supremacy for 1915. Mr H. J. Tennant (Liberal M.P. for Berwickshire) speaking at Hubbora, said the defensive forces of the Empire were in perfect readiness and an expeditionary force was ready to start at any moment.
He added that Sir John French (Inspector-General of the Forces) had stated that the British guns were not inferior to tho.'e which had worked such havoc in the present war. CERMANY’S NAVY. INCREASING THE PERSONNEL. (Received Nov. 22. 11.5 p.m.) BERLIN, Nov. 22. The naw personnel will be increased in 1918 by 6125.
SOUTH AFRICA’S POLICY. EXPECTED TO BE WORTHY OF HER. INDIA AND NAVAL DEFENCE. (Received Nov. 22, 11.5 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 22.. The South African Governmenr is conferring with the Admiralty on naval defence, and is likely to make early proposals not unworthy of her place in the Empire. The Premier, replying to Mr. pell, said the question of India offering a Dreadnought had not been raised. He understood that the Indian authorities considered that India’s presentshare in the expenditure on Empire defence was sufficient.
