TENNIS.
AUST BA ETA N CHAMPIONSHIPS. IUNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT] (Received Nov. 22, 11.5 p.m.) MELBOUBNE, Nov. 22. Main interfered with the tennis. The weather was cold and the courts were heavy. SINGLES. Brookes forfeited to Ollivier and Heath to Marsh, the players fearing that the singles would be too severe a strain before the cup matches. Park beat Ollivier 6—l, 6—2, 6—3. Ollivier showed some brilliancy, but was never dangerous. Lowe beat Eice 11—9, 6—2, 6—2. Lowe’s length throughout was superior, but Eice put more weight into his strokes. Lowe’s service was excellent, and his work on the heavy court indicated that the Britisher’s chances are distinctly good if there are similar conditions. CUP DOUBLES. Beamish and Park beat Wright and Jones 6—4, 6—2, 2—6, 6—4. The winners are tine double players. Beamish was effective in his return service, backhand and smashing. Park showed clever driving, both in the return service and rallies. Both were extremely clever at killing anything short. They broke down the deeper lobs and scored heavily on short lobs. Their opponents were unable to find the length. The finals will probably be played to-morrow.
