SUPPOSED MURDER OF A CHILD.
A GHASTLY CASE. [PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM] AUCKLAND, Nov. 25. An inquiry was opened before the Coroner and a jury this morning in connection with the death of an infant whose body was found in a locked brief bag on some steps at tlie waterfront in Quay street. Dr Casement Aiken deposed to having made a post mortem examination. The body was fully nourished and weighed 61b, which was below the average. It had been treated in a. very primitive manner and a cord was tied three times round the neck. _ A piece of tape three-quarters on an inch wide was also tied in a reef knot around the neck. Thre.oak leaves had been pressed tightly info the child’s mouth and-there was a fracture on the right side of- the skull, but it was possible that this might have been caused when the bag was dropped on the steps. In the opinion of witness the child had lived and the cause of death was caused by the leaves or the tape referred to.
At the request of the chief-detective the Coroner granted an adjournment until December 17 to allow of further police enquiries.
