SHIELD

TARUHERU SPRING A SURPRISE ON UNITED.

A DEBACLE QX THE DOMAIN

The various competitions were continued on Saturday, in delightful weather. Wanderers overwhelmed Kia Kaha at Victoria Domain, while Taruflieru had all the best of their game with United on the suburban ground. WANDERERS v. KIA KAHA. This match was played on the concrete pitch on the town ground. Kia Kaha hatted first, but were routed for 27 runs by Young and McMahon, in ten overs. The former secured four wickets for 6 runs, and the latter six for 17. At call of time, Wanderers had run up 257 for six wickets. Moore, McMahon, Young, Cranney, and McConnell were all in capital form with the hat. and scored freely off the seven bowlers tried. The following are the

UNITED v. TARUHERU These elevens met on the Taruheru ground, where a capital wicket had been prepared by C. Whiteley. Taruheru had first use of the wicket, and ran up the respectable' total of 191. The brothers, A. and B. Morrison, recent arrivals from Canterbury, were responsible for almost the whole of the Taruheru total. The former played a brilliant innings for KM, which included three grand drives clean out of the ground for 6 each, and eleven tourers. He had more than a fair share of-luck, as he gave four distinct chances, including two in succession to Gartshore at long-on. Nevertheless, lie proved that lie knew how to handle his bat, his on-side strokes being executed with power and precision. B. Morrison scored 31 in goc-d style, though he, too, was. leniently treated by the fieldsmen. No other batsman on the side reached -double figures. United could only total 55 in their first innings. Seven wickets were down for 29 runs, when P. Fromm, the last man, joined Gibson, who had gone in first, and the pair made the only stand of the innings, taking the total to 55, when Gibson was bowled by a fast yorker from B. Morrison. This bowler put up a fine performance in securing six wickets for 27 runs oft ten overs. He proved himself a really clever trundler, being full of resource, and seldom sending down two balls ■ alike. He turned them well from both ! sides, and employed a fast straight one with effect. His slow leg-break was a particularly dangerous delivery, as it had lots' of spin on, and came fast off the pitch. Hooker, who kept the other end going, bagged two for 21. United had to follow on, and when stumps were drawn at 6.30 they had scored 71 for the loss of two wickets. Greene.. Gibson, and Gartshore were responsible for the runs- Ibe following are the scores:—
